Language lessons

If you have moved and will start language lessons, you will have to go to a language school. The language lessons are given in a classroom, which means that you will follow the lessons with several people at the same time.
  • First intake

First you will receive an intake interview. This is a conversation that assesses your language and learning level. They do this by having you take a short test. After that, the language lessons start and you will pass within 1 to 3 years. This can sometimes take longer.

  • What will you learn at the language school:
Dutch reading. Writing in Dutch. Listening and understanding Dutch. Speaking Dutch. Knowledge of Dutch Society. Orientation on the Dutch Labor Market.
  • We advise you:
Starting with learning the Dutch language already in the AZC through the offer there. This ensures that you will learn Dutch more quickly during the language lessons. Make use of the extra language support of refugee work. Check the integration website for more information.

The different Language levels

You can integrate in the Netherlands at various levels. The minimum level is A1 and the maximum level is B2. We explain below what the different levels and what options they offer.
  • The level A1

Level A1 is an intermediate step on the way to level A2. At A1 level you will learn the basics of communicating in the Dutch language. You can manage in everyday situations, but to find a job you will have to learn and pass level A2.

  • The level A2

By obtaining A2 you will be able to progress to an MBO training and you will have the basic knowledge of the Dutch language and you will increase the chance of successfully finding a job.

  • The level B1

Level B1 is intended for people who want to work or study at MBO level 3 or 4 after their civic integration programme.

  • The level B2

Finally, we discuss the level B2. This is the level you need if you want to work or study at a college or university.

  • We advise you:
