Identity work "Future"

The core theme that emerged during the first needs assessment meetings was Identity Work. This involves reflecting on identity questions, which consists of various components inextricably linked to one's context. When you flee, but also when you migrate, you enter a different context. Not only are you physically different, but your role within the family also changes, as does your job, income, the value of your education, the language you have to communicate in. You have to reinvent yourself. It's important that the effort this step requires is recognized and acknowledged. A professional can help by translating the familiar from the past into possibilities for the future: for example, if you once enjoyed cooking, perhaps you can continue doing so in catering. We've incorporated the findings from the first meetings into a chart that helps professionals with this "translation" during conversations with refugees.
