Some tips

  • Determine what language skills are required for the job

    • Make a list of the communication skills required for the job. For example: making phone calls with customers, giving presentations, reading safety instructions, etc.
    • Only ask for knowledge of Dutch if it's absolutely essential for the job.
    • Distinctly distinguish between speaking, understanding, reading, and writing Dutch. For cleaning staff, for example, it's essential that they understand instructions well, but writing is less important.
  • Draw up a clear job description

    • Write your job posting clearly. This way, job seekers will understand it.
    • Focus on a limited number of tasks that you can learn quickly and easily.
    • Don't talk about "good knowledge of Dutch," but describe what the candidate should be able to say, understand, read, and write in Dutch. For example: you consult with colleagues, read labels, understand instructions, etc.
  • Publish your vacancy on Statushouders.org with #TalentenScan

    • Include #TalentenScan in the job title. For example: 'Caregiver #TalentenScan'. This shows that you offer opportunities to anyone with strong motivation for your vacancy.
    • Indicate the desired Dutch language proficiency. Add another language if needed.
    • Adjust your existing vacancies on Statushouders.org if needed. For example: add #TalentenScan, adjust the language skills, write the text clearly...
  • Adjust the application procedure

Don't reject candidates based on their resume; instead, invite them for an interview. Keep the application process short and accessible. Focus on the candidates' motivation and potential, and what they can achieve through on-the-job training or a work-based learning program. Test skills in a practical, language-friendly way. For example, have candidates demonstrate their skills. Check residence permits to ensure candidates are permitted to work in the Netherlands.
  • Make sure you get off to a good start

    • Organize a warm welcome on the first day.
    • Be clear about the tasks and working conditions.
    • Does your employee not speak Dutch well? Consider language coaching. A language coach will teach your employee Dutch in the workplace.
